From 26 to 29 June 2026, Anna Jarkiewicz and Mariusz Granosik represented the YOUROPE project team at the Joint World Conference on Social Work, Education and Social Development (SWSD 2026) in Nairobi, Kenya. Held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre under the theme “Harambee for Sustainable Shared Futures,” the conference highlighted the importance of collective action, solidarity, and shared responsibility in building a sustainable future.
They presented “Community-Led Research and Action: Advancing Collective Civic Learning as Social Work Education,” co-authored by Mariusz Granosik, Anna Jarkiewicz, and Samuel Kiriro. The presentation explored Community-Led Research and Action (CLRA) as an approach to fostering collective civic learning in social work education. It addressed participation, knowledge creation, and social action – areas central to the YOUROPE project.
Co-author Samuel Kiriro is one of the co-creators of the CLRA approach and leads Ghetto Foundation, an organisation operating in Mathare, Kenya. Alongside the conference, Samuel organised two study visits: one to Ghetto Foundation and another to Community Mappers, an organisation working in Kibera. Both organisations specialise in CLRA. The visits offered an opportunity to learn directly from their experiences and explore how community-led research informs local action.
We will continue our collaboration with Samuel and Ghetto Foundation through the DEMOCRATE project, developing joint activities grounded in the experiences and knowledge of local communities.
The presentation aligned with key conference themes, including participatory approaches to social work, co-creation in education, the democratisation of knowledge, and civic engagement. Participation in SWSD 2026 and the accompanying study visits provided an opportunity to share YOUROPE’s experiences and contribute to international discussions on how research, education, and collaboration with communities can support social change.
